Maths Homework Due 4th June 2014

Kensuke's Kingdom Survival Challenge


As you are aware our group reading novel this term is the fabulous Kensuke's Kingdom by the very talented Michael Morpurgo.  I am very excited about reading this book as it is one of my all time children's novels and I hope you love it as much as me by the end of the book.

"The Island looked perhaps two or three miles in length, no more. It was shaped a bit like an elongated peanut, but longer at one end than the other. There was a long swat he of brilliant white beach on both sides of the island, and at the far end another hill, the slopes steeper and more thickly wooded, but not so high as mine. With the exception of these twin peaks the entire island seemed to be covered with forest. So far as I could see there was no sign of any human life. Even then, as I stood there, that first morning, filled with apprehension at the terrifying implications of my dreadful situation, I remember thinking how wonderful it was, a green jewel of an island framed in white, the sea all about it a silken shimmering blue. Strangely, perhaps comforted somehow by the extraordinary beauty of the place, I was not at all down-hearted. On the contrary I felt strangely elated. I was alive. Stella Artois was alive. We had survived." (p.53)

As picturesque and idyllic this island may appear there are a selection of problems that Michael and Stella might face that can be solved using basic mathematics.  Can you help them Blwyddyn 6?

Have a go at solving these problems then when you are finished think about what other problems could occur and make up some of your own for your partner to solve back in class.

ALL groups need to look at the following criteria to help you be successful in this task. Remember Michael and Stella are depending on you:

MUST: Use RUCSAC and show all workings out.
SHOULD: Reflect on your problem solving process and explain any misconceptions.
COULD: Explain how you could make these problems harder by adding different factors and produce your own problems for thinking partners to solve.

1. You decide you want to divide the land on the island up to plant different crops. You want to make rectangles with perimeters of 32m. How many different rectangular shapes can you make with this perimeter? 

2. You need to fill up your water tank with exactly 37 litres of water. You have a 5 litre bucket and a 3 litre bucket. You can only carry one bucket on each trip. How many trips will you need to make to the river? 

3. You only have a 3 litre and a 5 litre bucket. How can you measure exactly one litre? What other exact litre measurements can you make? 

4. On a trip to the beach you find a 4 litre and a 7 litre bucket washed ashore. What exact litre measurements can you make with your two new buckets? 

5. You collect sticks to make a shelter. When you put them in piles of 5 you have 3 left over. When you put them in piles of 4 you have 3 left over. You know you have more than 55 sticks— How many have you got?

Investigating Number Statements

Due Friday 14th February 2014


Your maths mission this week is to investigate a range of number statements involving known multiples and odd & even numbers.

Group 1 and 2
  1. Half way between any 2 multiples of 10 is a multiple of 5.
  2. Any odd number is double a number add 1.
  3. A number is not a multiple of 5 if it does not end in 5 or 0.
  4. A multiple of 6 is also a multiple of 3.
  5. If you add and odd and even number together, the answer is always even.
  6. If you times and whole number by 10, the answer will end in a zero.
  7. Every multiple of 6 is twice a multiple of 2.
  8. If you add together the digits in any multiple of 9, the answer will be 3.
  9. Multiples of 4 always end in 2, 4, 6 or 8.
  10. The sum of 3 odd numbers is odd.


Extension – Can you make up some of your own number statements for a partner to investigate, based on multiples or odd/even numbers?


    Group 3 and 4
    1. The sum of 3 odd numbers is odd.
    2. If you add and odd and even number together, the answer is always even.
    3. A multiple of 9 is also a multiple of 3.
    4. Dividing a number by 100 moves every digit 2 places to the right.
    5. The product of any three consecutive numbers is always even.
    6. The product of any 2 odd numbers is always odd.
    7. A number is a multiple of 4 if its last two digits are divisible by 4.
    8. Every multiple of 12 is three times a multiple of 4. 
    9. If you add together the digits in any multiple of 90, the product will be 9.
    10. Multiples of 4 always end in 2, 4 or 8.

    Homework Due Friday 17th

    Survival Kit


    Survival means 'remaining alive' and there are many situations that humans can find themselves in where survival isn't easy!  In our modern world, we have warm homes, electric fires, food from the supermarket and plenty of running water.  But what if you found yourself lost in a forest?  How would you survive? To survive, humans need four main things....
    • Shelter
    • Warmth
    • Food
    • Clean Water


    We need shelter and warmth to protect us from the rain and cold, and food and water to keep our bodies working properly.  What would you eat in a forest?  where would you find clean water?  how would you make a shelter?  what are the basic things that could help keep you alive?

    I will give you a worksheet in class tomorrow that you will need to complete.  You will be using your addition skills for the first section.  You MUST show all your workings out and give reasons for your answers.

    In the second section you will be using your direction and angle skills.  In order to complete the task you will need to use an eight point compass.  Look at the one below to refresh your memories.

    Another reminder that will help is a right angle = 90 degrees and therefore half a right angle is 45 degrees.

    You will discover that the maths you have learnt in school will help you survive in the wild!
